Extension and reconstruction of the wastewater treatment plant - Smurfit Kappa Belgrade
Smurfit Kappa Belgrade, the oldest paper factory in Serbia, founded way back in 1921, has been an important part of Belgrade's industrial heritage for more than a century. Located on the right bank of the Danube, in the municipality of Palilula, the factory today operates as part of the global Smurfit Kappa group - one of the world's leading manufacturers of paper-based packaging.
The project of extension and reconstruction of the technological waste water treatment plant (WWTP) was launched. The goal of the project is to enable a higher degree of purification of the water produced during production, before it is discharged back into the Danube River, thus ensuring compliance with the highest domestic and European environmental standards.

The new system involves the modernization of existing facilities and the construction of a number of new ones — from tanks, anaerobic and aerobic reactors, pools, pipe bridges, to facilities for biogas treatment and sludge dehydration. The project envisages a phased construction, which allows the factory not to interrupt its production process, with the simultaneous implementation of all works and the installation of new equipment.
Special attention is paid to the application of energy-efficient technologies, automation of processes and reduction of the amount of waste and emissions. This results in significantly less impact on the environment, better effluent quality control and long-term protection of water resources.
This project has multiple significance — not only for the factory, but also for the city of Belgrade and the entire course of the Danube River. By upgrading and modernizing the WWTP, Smurfit Kappa Belgrade confirms its responsibility towards the community and nature, as well as its commitment to the goal that every step in paper production takes place in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.
